Welcome to The Hard Landscaping Co

Hi, I'm Steve. You might already know me from South Devon Construction, where I've been building across Devon for over 25 years. I set up The Hard Landscaping Co because I kept getting asked to do patios, driveways, walls, and fencing as standalone jobs – and I realised there was a real gap for someone who actually knows how to build things properly doing this kind of work full time.

That's the thing with hard landscaping. It's construction. A retaining wall isn't a gardening job, it's engineering. A patio that sinks after two winters wasn't laid by someone who understands sub-bases. I bring all the knowledge I've picked up over 25 years on building sites – plus my qualifications in quantity surveying and construction management – and put it to work in your garden.

We're based in Newton Abbot and cover most of South Devon. Torbay, Totnes, Ashburton, Bovey Tracey, Teignmouth, Dawlish, Plymouth, and Exeter.

We'll come out, have a look at what you want doing, talk through the options, and give you a proper written quote. No pressure, no sales pitch – just an honest conversation about what's possible and what it'll cost.

Give me a call on 07528 095 320 – happy to come out for a chat.

Extra Bits

Steps are straightforward – if your garden drops away from the patio, we'll build steps in matching material so everything ties together. Raised planters are popular too – built in stone or rendered block, they bring some greenery into the patio area without losing floor space. We can do built-in bench seating as well, which is handy if you don't want chairs cluttering things up.

Low-voltage LED lighting in the steps and around the edges of the patio makes a massive difference once it gets dark. It's not expensive to do and it means you actually use the space on summer evenings instead of sitting inside looking at it through the window.

Retaining Walls

If your garden slopes, you're probably losing a load of usable space. I see it all the time in Devon – people with massive gardens that are basically just a hillside. A retaining wall lets you carve out flat areas from that slope, so you can actually do something with the space.

This is one area where having a construction background really matters. The forces on a retaining wall are serious – all that wet earth pushing against it, especially in a Devon winter. Get the foundations wrong, skip the drainage behind it, and you'll be watching it lean over within a few years. I've fixed plenty of walls that other people have built too light or too shallow. It's always cheaper to do it right first time.

We build in natural stone, concrete block, rendered block, and gabion cages depending on the look you're after and what the site needs.

Most of the time a retaining wall is part of a bigger job – you build the wall, then lay a patio on the flat area you've created, maybe add some steps between levels. We can handle all of that as one project.

Patios

I've lost count of the patios I've seen that were laid on a couple of inches of sand and started moving within a year. It doesn't have to be that way. When we lay a patio, we dig down properly, put in a decent sub-base, compact it, and lay on a full mortar bed. It takes longer, costs a bit more in materials, but the result is a patio that's still flat and solid ten or fifteen years down the line.

We work with all sorts – Indian sandstone, porcelain, limestone, slate, block paving, and good old concrete slabs. Each has its pros and cons and I'm always happy to talk through what makes sense for your particular garden and budget.

It's not just about the surface either. Getting the falls right so water runs away from the house, making sure you're below the damp-proof course, dealing with any existing drainage – these are the bits that get overlooked and then cause problems later. We sort all of that out.

If you want steps, raised planters, built-in seating, lighting – all of that's on the table. Or if you just want a nice flat area to stick a table and chairs on, that's fine too. Not every job has to be complicated.

Decking

Decking gets a bit of a bad reputation and honestly, some of it's deserved. Cheap timber on a wobbly frame that goes green and slippery after one winter – we've all seen it. But a properly built deck on good foundations with the right materials is a completely different thing.

We do both timber and composite. Timber's great if you like the natural look and don't mind giving it a coat of oil or stain once a year. Composite costs more upfront but you basically never have to touch it again – no rotting, no splinters, no algae. The modern composites look really good too, much better than the plastic-looking stuff from ten years ago.

Underneath, we build everything on concrete pad foundations with a proper joist framework. Joists at 400mm centres, decent fixings, ventilation underneath so moisture doesn't get trapped. That's what stops it bouncing when you walk on it and keeps it from rotting from below.

We can build at any level – ground-level platforms, raised decks off bifold doors, multi-level designs with steps between. If you want built-in benches, planters, or lighting, we sort all that out as part of the build rather than bolting it on afterwards.

Fencing

Fencing is one of those jobs that looks simple until you actually have to do it on a slope, around tree roots, or along a boundary where nothing's quite straight. We deal with all of that – the awkward stuff is just part of the work for us.

We fit closeboard, panel, picket, post and rail, and slatted screens. If I'm being honest, for a back garden boundary I'll nearly always recommend closeboard over panels. It's built on site from individual boards, so it flexes in the wind instead of catching it. Panels blow down in storms. Closeboard doesn't. It costs a bit more but it lasts a lot longer.

Whatever type we're fitting, all the posts go in concrete at a proper depth. We use gravel boards along the bottom to keep timber off the wet ground, which stops it rotting from the base up. Sounds basic, but you'd be surprised how many fences skip this and then wonder why the bottom's gone within five years.

Slatted screens have become really popular lately and I can see why – they look sharp as a garden divider or privacy screen. We build these on site to whatever dimensions you need, in a range of timbers and finishes.

Tarmac and Resin Driveways

A good driveway needs to do two things: look right for your house and handle cars driving over it day in, day out without falling apart. Everything we lay gets a proper excavation and a compacted sub-base first. That's the bit that carries the weight, not the surface material.

Block paving's probably the most popular option and there's a good reason for that – loads of colours and patterns to choose from, and if you ever need to dig up a section for a pipe or a cable, you just lift the blocks and put them back. We lay on a compacted sub-base with a sand laying course and finish with kiln-dried sand brushed into the joints.

Tarmac's a great choice if you want something clean and hard-wearing without spending a fortune, especially on bigger areas. Resin-bound is the premium option. It looks smart, it's low maintenance, and because it's permeable you usually don't need planning permission, which matters if you're paving over a front garden.

We do natural stone driveways as well – granite setts, Indian sandstone, porcelain. These go on a full mortar bed over a concrete base because they need to take vehicle weight. More expensive, but the result is something really special.

Pergolas

We build proper structures that add something real to your garden, whether that's a timber frame over a dining area or a full aluminium louvred system that gives you an outdoor room you can use all year round.

For timber, we use decent-sized posts and rafters – nothing flimsy. Everything gets bolted together properly and anchored into concrete foundations. You can leave it to weather to a natural silver-grey or keep it treated – either way it'll be there for years.

The aluminium louvred pergolas are impressive bits of kit. You can open and close the roof slats to control the light, and some systems have rain sensors that close automatically when it starts chucking it down. Add in some LED lighting and a heater and you've basically got another room. They're not cheap, but they completely change how you use your garden.

We often do pergolas as part of a bigger project – a new patio with a pergola over part of it, some raised planters around the edge, a bit of lighting. Doing it all together usually works out better value and it all ties in properly rather than looking like separate bits bolted together.

About The Hard Landscaping Co

I'm Steve. I've been in the building trade for over 25 years. I started as a labourer, worked my way through pretty much every trade on a building site, and eventually set up South Devon Construction, which handles new builds, extensions, conversions, and everything else that falls under the construction umbrella.

I kept getting approached for standalone hard landscaping jobs – patios, driveways, retaining walls, fencing, decking. I was doing them through South Devon Construction, but it got to the point where it made sense to give that side of things its own identity. That's where The Hard Landscaping Co came from.

The thing that sets us apart is pretty simple: I'm a builder, not a gardener. I've got a Level 3 Diploma in Quantity Surveying and Cost Estimation and a Level 7 Diploma in Construction Management. When I build a retaining wall, I know what the forces on it are and how to design the foundations to handle them. When I lay a patio, I understand sub-base compaction, drainage falls, and damp-proof course levels. This stuff is second nature after 25 years, and it's the reason our work lasts.

Too many outdoor projects get treated like they're not real construction work, and then they fail because the basics weren't done right. I treat every job the same way I'd treat a building project – proper planning, proper preparation, proper materials, and proper workmanship.

I'm based in Newton Abbot and cover most of South Devon – Torbay, Totnes, Ashburton, Bovey Tracey, Teignmouth, Dawlish, Plymouth, and Exeter. I'm fully insured and every project starts with a free visit and a written quote. I don't do hard sells. I turn up, we have a chat about what you want, and I give you an honest price. If it works for you, great. If not, no hard feelings.

Give me a ring on 07528 095 320 if you've got something in mind. Even if it's just an idea at this stage, I'm happy to come out and talk it through.
